The CAR-15 (Colt Automatic Rifle 15) is part of the same family of guns as the AR-15 and M16, and was originally produced by Colt. The term CAR-15 is basically used today for AR-15′s and M16′s that are carbine-length.
The CAR-15′s barrel length is 10 inches, which is half that of the M16. The M4′s barrel is 14.5 inches long. Although many changes have been made to the gun since its inception, it has been used in some form or another since the Vietnam War.
You can build an AR-15 (which is very closely related to the CAR-15) to your liking at this site. Just click on “AR15Builder.com.”
